February 20th 2014 Global Warming....NOT!!!!

It's been a busy week. Lots of running around and also some being trapped in the house. So much for global warming, we got another blizzard this week! I had gone to the dentist a midst some flurries on Friday but by the time I came out it was REALLY coming down! To top it off, I had to run a few errands and my timing for all the buses was off so I ended up running errands and walking all the way home. It's a pretty long walk especially in snow! When I came in the door, I was covered in snow all over my coat and head!
I had succeeded with my errands though which was to pick up some chocolates and cheeses for Gary for Valentine's day!
Here, the women give the men chocolate and then on White day, a month later, if the men liked the women they give them chocolate back, but more! I hope Gary likes me....

Valentine's Day is also special to us because it's the birthday of our oldest child. Happy 29th birthday Timmy!!!!

On Thursday, Gary and I were in Shibuya meeting up with a pastor and his family from one of our churches in Australia. We had a nice visit and ate donuts at Krispi Kreme! Afterwards, they had to head back to their hotel so Gary and I did a little wandering around. (No, that isn't our car, lol)

We found a neat restaurant at the top of a building... the elevator had a great view of the area!

The restaurant had a very reasonable lunch menu so we stopped for lunch and had our Valentine's Day dinner a day early!

On church building news, Gary has been working all week finalizing things with the Realtor and owner. The owner wanted a corporate profile, so with expert help from a missionary in Belize, he was able to get that to them and that should be the final red tape needed before signing the contract! I just love our Fellowship and all the helpful brothers and sisters around the world! (Big thank you to Melissa!!!)  If all goes well, we should be in the building by March 1st!

On Sunday, the 16th, it was our youngest daughter's birthday. Happy 23rd birthday Hopie! As Alejandra in Mexico City, liked to say, "Cabello de oro, dientes de perla, la bella y esvelta Hope!"

In other big news, our Hopie will be coming to visit us in a week! She surprised us with the news that she got a plane ticket and managed to squeeze out a week between university and work! Yay! I can't wait to hug her!

Gary ordered me a desk for Valentine's Day! Now you can see where I work churning out this captivating blog of mine! Lol!

On to food!

So, as I mentioned earlier, Gary and I ate at that nice restaurant in Shibuya. Gary had delicious grilled Unagi  and I had some very tasty chicken yakitori! The ambiance was very nice, the food was quite good and the company, of course, was the best! Gary's food came in a sizzling hot stone bowl!

For desert, I ordered the house custard, it was delicious with a wonderful caramelized creme brulee style crust!  Aren't the serving dishes cute?!

Yesterday, I made us a bread pudding with raisins for breakfast... it was the first time I've made bread pudding but we both liked the results!

So that's it for now! I'll get back to you soon when something else interesting happens! Toodles!

February 12, 2014 Blizzard, Building and Stuff!

Hello Everyone!  My following has doubled!!! I am proud to announce that this blog officially has two followers now!  Lol!

Since I last blogged things have been happening! The biggest and most important being that we have been approved to rent the third floor of this building for our church!  Praise God!!!

If you recall, we first went to look at this particular building in Mitaka on Christmas Eve and since then we have been in negotiations to rent it. It has been a LONG and arduous process! Gary has exchanged SO many phone calls and emails! When it comes to business, nothing here is done quickly!
When we first arrived in Tokyo, last Oct. to Jan., to scout out the land, we hadn't gotten any clear direction from the Lord until our last day before returning State-side. While we were waiting for our bus to the airport,  God stirred us both about this area of the city. When we returned, we looked at many apartments to live in, and without even realizing it at the time, we ended up in this very area! When we started our search for a church building, we saw buildings all over the city but nothing became available to us. Then came Christmas Eve when our Realtor called us about this building, in the very area of the city we wanted! We hardly dared hope, especially after it appeared negotiations had once again stalled, but after some fasting and prayer God moved on the owner and we were approved to rent!!!!  Gary still has all the massive paperwork to sign and meetings with the owner and Realtors, but if things go smoothly, we should be in our building by March 1st!
PRAISE GOD!!!!!

So much for Spring, Tokyo had it's largest snowstorm in decades last week! It was crazy snowing out! While the accumulation didn't seem like much for this Wisconsin-ite, in this city that hardly ever gets snow, it was enough to paralyze most of the trains and air flights.  Here's a view from our apartment.
This was just near the beginning of the storm, it snowed all that day and into the night!
Poor Cup a Noodle mascot in Yokohama had to work!

And it was cold! Brrrr!

On to Food!
A couple of brothers from our Norfolk, Virginia church are in the area for a few months for work. They kindly brought me some Chile Guajillo! I was tickled to finally be able to cook us some Mexican food!
It's just some simple Chile Colorado with rice and beans but it was delicious! The other nice thing is they have an APO address so Gary was able to order me some Minsa for making corn tortillas, quesadillas  etc. I'm SO excited for that to arrive!!!

Gary bought me some cute little candies the other day.

Inside the candies all have a different cute animal on the packet.

Turns out the candies are candy/cough drops, but very mild ones, so I think maybe these are for children but I like them anyway!

One day we were surprised to receive a package in the mail from our friend Atsuko. She sent us a food gift to celebrate Springs' arrival! Food gifts are very popular in Japan with the basement of many department stores dedicated to different types of food gifts.

Our gift consisted of goma-dofu varieties, and ochazuke . The goma-dofu is a sesame based "tofu", served chilled with the sauce packet. In this case it was a citrus blend flavor. The ochazuke is served over rice and hot water added, creating a flavored rice-soup.

I made some simmered chicken and daikon to eat with the meal, nothing fancy but it is warm and tasty.

So that's it for today, didn't get up to too many shenanigans this week since we were trapped indoors for a couple of days with the snow, but things are going to be getting real busy in the days to come as we will have a church building to get ready for services!
Woo Hoo!!!!!

February 4th 2013 Happy Spring!!!!

                                             Spring!!!!!

Spring is upon us! February 4th is the official first day of Spring in Japan! Yay!!! I'm all for early Springtime! It's actually rainy and quite foggy outside today, kind of gloomy looking for the first day of Spring, but yesterday it was sunny and warm. (Edited to add this: Later it turned to snow! Our first snow of the year actually. It didn't accumulate but it was pretty to look at!)

I had a toothache last week and am half way through a problematic root canal, but that should hopefully be resolved in the next few dental visits and then I should be good to go again! I'm not a fan of Obama's Un-affordable health care act, but Japan's national insurance is wonderful and affordable!

Gary and I were having dinner at an Italian restaurant here the other night. It's funny because we really enjoy their appetizers more than anything else, so we just order a bunch of those. It's really funny because the waiters start bringing all these plates to our table and it looks like we're gorging ourselves, but its only a bunch of appetizers!
(edited to add: this is NOT a picture of our table, this is a picture of a medieval feast) lol

Anyway, we were enjoying our meal when Gary received a phone call from our Realtor saying there may be progress on the building we want to rent for the church! Everything had pretty much ground to a halt in negotiations but then there was this ray of HOPE!!!! I high-fived Gary right there in the restaurant, whatever, we were already the crazy foreigners with all those plates on the table!

On to food!!!

I ran across this Cheeto flavor the other day.
Chicken Stew flavor!
It took a few days for me to get up the nerve to try them and when I did it was about as I expected. Awful!!! I could taste the carrots and broccoli which is definitely not a flavor I want in my Cheetos.
Gary didn't mind them as much, he described them as "Meh" and not nearly as bad as the Pepsi flavor Cheetos.

I was walking home the other day and stopped in a convenience store and picked up a pizza flavor Nikuman. It was delicious... but then I love just about all things pizza!

Traditionally, the Nikuman have pork in the steamed bun, but apparently, the pizza ones are popular as well in the convenience stores.

I tried out a new recipe the other day, pork hasami yaki. It was quite tasty and a recipe I'll make again!

I find a lot of good recipes on Cook Pad online. They just translated the recipes into English last year. Most of the recipes are fast and easy!

Well that's it for now!  Have a great day!!!!
